PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller for an automatic transmission capable of performing off up operation without waiting for a fixed time at all times. SOLUTION: This controller for the automatic transmission consists of an off up judging means 21 for judging whether gear shift operation is off up operation or not, an input torque computing means 21 for computing engine torque per predetermined time when it is judged that the gear shift operation is off up operation, an input torque stabilization judging means for monitoring fluctuation of computed engine torque as time elapses and judging whether engine torque is stabilized or not, and a friction engaging element drive control means for performing engaging operation accompanied with up-shift operation of a friction engaging element when it is judged that engine torque is stabilized. Off up operation can be immediately done when an engine output becomes a condition suitable for off up operation without waiting for a fixed time at all times by performing up-shift operation when engine torque is stabilized so that speedy off up operation becomes possible. |
