The device (10) has planetary gears (26, 30) connected with each other by a planetary shaft (34) and supported against corresponding gear rims (36, 38). The gear rim (36) is connected with an axle carrier (12), and the gear rim (38) is arranged in a tandem box (14). The gear rim (38) is movably formed in the gear (30) such that the rim (38) is torsion-resistantly connected with the tandem box in one switching position of the device and is detached from the tandem box and connected with the rim (36) in another switching position of the device. An independent claim is also included for a method for driving a tandem axle of a vehicle or automotive work machine.
