Class 78 (1) In a belt conveyer of the kind in which the belt is both supported and driven by cables travelling with the belt one at each side, the belt serving only as a carrying surface, a reinforcement of cord, fabric, wire or the like extends in the lateral direction of the belt and cable-engaging means are attached to each side of the belt, the belt itself providing the lateral strength between the cable engaging means. As shown in Fig. 1, the belt is of rubber reinforced by a single layer 10 of wire gauze having selvedged side edges, and cable engaging hooks 16 are secured at short intervals along the belt by rivets 14. In a modification, Fig. 3, the hooks are secured to the gauze before the application of the rubber coating layers by rivets 18 and plates 19. In Fig. 4 there are two layers of gauze with a rubber layer between, the hooks 16 being vulcanized in the rubber between the two layers of gauze. The belt may be reinforced by multi-strand wires extending crosswise of the belt, the wires being held during manufacture by coarse textile threads extending lengthwise of the belt. The belt may be further reinforced by a ply or plies of 'woven textile fabric on one or both faces of the wire gauze or wires. |
