An apparatus for converting gray scale data for an LCD device is provided to reduce manufacturing cost by forming a gray scale converting unit in an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) driver. An apparatus for converting gray scale data for an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) device includes a first line memory(51), a gray scale storing unit(52), a data converting unit(55), a data compression unit(53), a data extraction unit(54), and a second line memory(56). The first line memory stores gray scale data for operating the LCD. The gray scale storing unit stores gray scale displayed through an LCD panel. The data converting unit generates gray scale data required for LCD operation based on the gray scale data of the first line memory and gray scale storing unit. The data compression unit compresses gray scale data from data converting unit and stores the compressed gray scale data. The data extraction unit extracts the compression of the gray scale data. The second line memory stores gray scale data from the gray scale storing unit and outputs the stored gray scale data to drive the LCD.
