A music message transceiving method of a portable terminal and a music message service system are provided to change characters included in a text message transceived between portable terminals into sound information to reproduce the sound information as certain melody, thereby increasing the utility of a message service provided from the terminal. A memory(170) temporarily or semipermanently stores at least one piece of scale information and a music message written on the basis of the scale information. A key input unit(110) designates a sound corresponding to a particular scale when the music message is written. An audio processor reproduces the sound. An RF(Radio Frequency) unit(120) transceives the music message. A display(150) displays the scale information and mapping information of the key input unit, and displays a writing window and an opening window when the music message is received. A sound source generator(190) controls the audio processor so that the sound is generated, by activating the stored scale information. A controller(130) controls signal flows among the memory, the key input unit, the audio processor, the RF unit, the display, and the sound source generator.
