PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a friction material having a surface layer enhancing primary fade resistance and braking force without scorching. SOLUTION: This friction material 1 is obtained by hot pressure molding a raw material mixture containing a fibrous base material, a friction adjusting material and a binder resin. The material 1 has a base layer A and a surface layer B. The raw material mixture that forms the surface layer B comprises a blowing agent.
