PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply and surely detect a fault pixel at a low cost. SOLUTION: The specified pixels of the same-color pixels in the vicinity of an object pixel (e) are used as comparison pixels (a), (b), (c), (d), (e), (f), (g), (h) and (i). The absolute values of differences between each comparison pixels and the object pixel are operated arithmetically. The absolute values of differences are compared with a first threshold value, and the number of the comparison pixels having the absolute values of differences larger than the first threshold value is detected. The number is compared with a second threshold value. When the number is larger than the second threshold value, the object pixel is decided as the fault pixel. When the number is smaller than the second threshold value, the object pixel is decided as a normal pixel. This invention is applied to a digital still camera. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
