PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of excellently removing foreign matter from a cleaning member such as a cleaning blade.

SOLUTION: A toner image is formed on an intermediate belt (S151) and a sensor reads the density of the toner image (S155). Once it is confirmed that the toner image is formed normally (YES at S157), a toner image is newly formed on the intermediate belt (S159) and the rear end of the toner image is expected to pass the position of an intermediate transfer cleaning blade (S161). Then reversing control over the intermediate transfer belt is performed (S163). Consequently, foreign matter is removed from the cleaning blade.
