<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a battery management system for estimating the initial SOC by using a linear equation and a method of driving the battery management system. <P>SOLUTION: This invention relates to a battery management system and a method of driving the battery management system.The battery management system 1 by one feature of this invention manages a battery including cells. The battery management system 1 comprises a sensing part 10 and an MCU 20. The sensing part 10 measures the voltage and the current of the battery. The MCU 20 receives the transmission of the voltage and the current of the battery, measures the OCV when a key is turned on by using the voltage of the battery, and estimates the initial SOC by using the OCV when the key is turned on. The MCU 20 divides the OCV into at least first and second OCV areas.
