PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an external electrode discharge lamp capable of preventing an organic matter of a conductive organic electrode material 2b from being degraded by ultraviolet rays by forming a base metallic film 2a on an outer surface of a flat discharge tube 1 and adhering the conductive organic electrode material 2b on it. SOLUTION: In the external electrode discharge lamp arranging an electrode 2 outside a flat discharge tube 1 sealing discharge gas, the electrode 2 is structured of a base metallic film 2a formed on a part of the outer surface of the flat discharge tube 1 and a conductive organic electrode material 2b adhered on the outer surface of the base metallic film 2a.
