PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a caliper which can correct measurement errors caused by the thermal expansion of a main scale inexpensively and simply to perform a high-precision measurement. SOLUTION: The caliper 1 comprises a temperature sensor 13 which is installed on a slider 11 to detect the temperature of the main scale 10, a temperature information storage section 14 for storing the temperature of the main scale 10 detected by the temperature sensor 13 and the displacement amount of the slider 11 with respect to the main scale 10 detected by an encoder 12 at the same time with the temperature detection as the temperature information of the main scale 10, and an arithmetic section 16 which calculates the amount of thermal expansion of the main scale 10 on the basis of the temperature information of the main scale 10 stored in the temperature information storage section 14 and corrects the displacement amount of the slider 11 with respect to the main scale 10 detected by the encoder 12 caused by the amount of thermal expansion.
