PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method excellent in a reaction efficiency of a monomer when a polyvinyl alcohol based resin containing a 1,2-diol structure unit is manufactured, and not performing contamination of a transferring pipe a distillation column for removal of the monomer after a polymerization reaction in a process from the polymerization to removal of the monomer in a manufacturing line. SOLUTION: A vinyl ester based monomer is copolymerized using a compound represented by the general formula (1), and the obtained copolymer is saponified, [wherein R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>each independently represent a hydrogen atom or an organic group, R<SP>4</SP>represents a 1-3C alkylene group which may have a single bond or an organic group, R<SP>5</SP>represents a 1-3C alkylene group which may have an organic group, R<SP>6</SP>, R<SP>7</SP>ad R<SP>8</SP>represent a hydrogen atom or an organic group, and R<SP>9</SP>and R<SP>10</SP>represent a hydrocarbon group].
