<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for inexpensively, safely and efficiently producing an imidazole compound of a material which exists as a liquid at around normal temperature, has a volatility lower than those of conventional water and organic solvents, and peculiar characteristics such as electric conduction with no electrolyte, and is important as a raw material for an ionic liquid usable as a solvent or an electrolyte imposing little load on the environment, or as a ligand for a metal complex. <P>SOLUTION: The method for producing the imidazole compound involves bringing an imidazoline compound into contact with oxygen in the presence of a catalyst comprising activated carbon satisfying formula (I): 4,000<S×(O<SB>co</SB>) (wherein, S is a BET specific surface area (m<SP>2</SP>/g); and O<SB>co</SB>is a wt.% of the surface oxygen amount released as carbon monoxide based on the activated carbon and measured by a specific method). <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
