PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor wavelength variable laser using a ring resonator having a large wavelength variable range. SOLUTION: The wavelength variable laser 1 has ring resonators 3a, 3b having the maximum value of transmittance at a fixed frequency spacing ratio (FSR). The ring resonators 3a, 3b have mutually different frequency spacing ratios. The wavelength variable laser 1 has a gain region 2 and a mode shape conversion region 4. The mode shape conversion region 4 continuously converts the mode shape of light, and converts the mode shape of light outputted from the front-stage side in the advance direction of light in the gain region 2 and the ring resonator 3a (ring resonator 3b) to the mode shape of light propagated at the rear-stage side in the advance direction.
