A lighting device and a display device are provided to enhance the efficiency of light ejection to a light guide plate from a light source, to apply high-parallelism light to the light guide plate, to improve the contrast, and to increase the utilization of light. A lighting device(10) consists of a light guide plate(12), a light source(14) and a cone(16). The cone, located between the light guide plate and the light source, comprises a base part(16a), a die part(16b) which is smaller than the base part, and an inclined plane(16c) which is located between the base part and the die part. As the light source and the light guide plate respectively are tightly attached to the die part and base part of the cone, light from the light source is conveyed to the light guide plate, without passing through air space.
