<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection-type display device with which complication of a manufacturing step is simplified. <P>SOLUTION: Since a reflection-type polarization conversion film 27 combines a function of converting a polarization direction of at least a part of s-polarized light emitted, from a polarization separating film 26 into a polarization direction of p-polarized light (functions as a retardation plate) and a function to reflect the p-polarized light with converted polarization direction and emit it from a polarization conversion element 23 (functions as a reflecting film), a retardation plate and a reflecting film of a conventional construction can be constructed, for example, as a single member, and there is no need for separately mounting them. As a result, the number of components of the polarization conversion element 23 is reduced, and the complexities of the manufacturing step is simplified.
