PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimally perform gray scale conversion according to a focal distance or photographing sensitivity in photographing with respect to a color image signal. SOLUTION: A signal processor includes: an image featured value extracting circuit 11 for extracting the image featured value of an image signal to be output from an imaging element 1 in response to a featured value extracting characteristic which is set in accordance with focal distance information indicating the focal distance in photographing; a gray scale conversion characteristic selecting circuit 14 for selecting a gray scale conversion characteristic among the predetermined gray scale conversion characteristics in response to the extracted image featured value and focal distance information; and a luminance gray scale conversion circuit 5 for performing gray scale conversion with respect to the image signal to be output form the imaging element 1, based on the gray scale conversion characteristic selected by the gray scale conversion characteristic selecting circuit 14. The gray scale conversion corresponding to the focal distance is performed by changing the featured value extracting characteristic and the gray scale conversion characteristic in response to the focal distance in photographing.
