The pod contains a capsule containing a liquid comprising ethanol and this capsule disintegrates or becomes permeable when brought into contact with water. A capsule for making coffee and containing ethanol disintegrates or becomes permeable when brought into contact with water. The capsule contains a liquid comprising at least 30 wt.% ethanol and 0-20 wt.% water. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) Coffee pod comprising an enclosed casing which contains ground coffee and which is water-permeable but retains the coffee, the pod also containing the capsule; (2) Method for preparing hot coffee by percolating the pod with hot water; and (3) Combination of a coffee making machine and the pod, the machine comprising a vessel for receiving the pod in between two opposing sides, the first side having an outlet for a pressurized hot water supply so that this water is forced through the pod and extracts the coffee and renders the capsule permeable, after which the coffee beverage exits via an outlet on the second side.
