PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately learn and set oil pressure characteristic value capable of absorbing an individual difference of an individual vehicle. SOLUTION: Before setting the oil pressure characteristic value, an electronic controller performs a series of motions to raise an engagement oil pressure up to the controllable minimum pressure, exhaust residual air in an oil passage, slowly engage the friction engagement element, detect the change in a turbine rotational number, learn a waiting oil pressure value, and then return a piston to an initial position, rapidly engage the friction engagement element, detect the change in the turbine rotational number, and learn a precharge time. When learning the precharge time in advance, the controller, prior to this, holds the oil pressure regarding to the friction engagement element in a predetermined time under a predetermined preserve pressure, and exhaust the residual air in the oil passage.
