PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve the uniformity of the surface potential of a rotary pinching member, such as a heating roller or pressure roller in a fixing device provided in contact with a contact member, such as a separating pawl, on the surface of the rotary pinching member. SOLUTION: The fixing device 22 includes a pair of the rotary pinching members 24, 26 disposed in contact with each other in order to pinch a recording medium 36. The at least one rotary pinching member 24 is formed as a rotary pinching member consisting of a rotatable roller or endless belt and is provided with a contact member 64 contacting the outer peripheral surface of the rotary pinching member 24 in a prescribed position of a direction orthogonal to the rotating direction of the rotary pinching member 24. The outer peripheral surface of the rotary pinching member 24 is segmented to a contact area P contacting a contact 64, and a non-contact area Q not contacting the contact member 64. The fixing device is provided with a surface potential control means 74 for controlling the potential of the contact area P so as to attain the same potential as the potential of the non-contact area Q.
