<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an object recognizing method capable of correctly recognizing the position of an object by template matching, and to provide its apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: A plurality of templates 20a, 20b, 20d, 20e are generated which are same in size, having background parts being respectively different in a number of pixels by prescribed number from the background part of a template 20c to be reference for mark recognition. The template matching is performed with respect to a mark image by each template, so as to calculate correlative values relative to the respective templates. Correction is performed so as to reduce the correlative value in the case of the larger background part because the correlative value is calculated to be higher, and so as to increase the correlative value in the case of the smaller background part because the correlative value is calculated to be lower.
