PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hologram type optical switch using nonlinear optical effect, which does not require an electrode and mechanism part for producing a speckle pattern and a power source for driving the electrode and mechanism part, has a simple structure, and permits high-speed switching. SOLUTION: The hologram type optical switch using nonlinear optical effect is configured such that: one multi-mode optical waveguide and two multi-mode optical waveguides that are made of highly light-transmissive nonlinear optical crystal or organic material are formed so as to converge at one place on a multi-mode optical waveguide support base plate; an optical material having the nonlinear optical effect is formed on the junction; and a holographic filter for changing the course of input light is formed in the multi-mode optical waveguide after passage through the optical material. As multi-mode optical waveguide material, LiNbO<SB>3</SB>into which impurities such as Ti are doped is used and, as holographic filter material, LiNbO<SB>3</SB>into which impurities such as Fe, Mn, Cu, Cr, Ce and Rh are doped is used.
