PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To execute a suitable homogeneous combustion operation according to an operating condition while realizing a good balance of high efficiency and stable combustion, smoothly warm up an engine while maintaining a stable combustion condition at a cool operation time such as a starting time, and execute a proper operation corresponding to an engine load at a warm operation time in an engine, in which a shade distribution of fuel/air mixture is formed in an intake path. SOLUTION: This engine comprises mixture distance extension means 11 capable of extending a mixture distance in an intake path 8, and intake fluidization reinforcing means 15 capable of reinforcing fluidization of the intake air. The engine also comprises control mean 30 for controlling the engine to switch between a long mixture homogeneous combustion operation for hemogeneously burning fuel/air mixture M in a combustion chamber 1 by actuating the mixture distance extension means 11 without actuating the intake fluidization reinforcing means 15 to extend the mixture distance, and a short mixture homogeneous combustion operation for hemogeneously burning the fuel/air mixture M in the combustion chamber 1 by actuating the intake fluidization reinforcing means 15 without actuating the mixture distance extension means 11 to reinforce the intake fluidization.
