PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide austenitic stainless steel wire rod and steel wire having excellent weldability and hot workability. SOLUTION: The austenitic stainless steel wire rod and steel wire for a welding material has excellent weldability and hot workability includes a ferrite phase in an austenite phase, and comprises, 30 to 100 ppm S, and in mass, 0.05 to 0.15% N and 33 to 43%, metal elements other than Fe in total. The content (average area ratio) of ferrite is controlled to 5 to 15%, and also, the content of S, the content of N, the content of ferrite and the content of the metal elements other than Fe are controlled in such a manner that the following inequality (A) is satisfied: S(ppm)≤-60x the content (average area ratio%) of ferrite-12x(the content (mass%) of the metal elements other than Fe)+984.
