PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an aqueous coating composition forming a cured film having sufficient mechanical strength in a treatment time shorter than ever in producing the cured film by crosslinking any one of various kinds of aqueous resins such as an aqueous urethane-based resin or aqueous acrylic resin with polycarbodiimide. SOLUTION: The aqueous coating composition comprises a crosslinkable aqueous resin (A), a carbodiimide compound (B) and a crosslinking promoter (C) represented by the general formula (I): HO-(CH2)n-SO3Na (wherein n is an integer of 1-5).
