PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an industrially simple method for the selective production of an N-carboxyalkyl-amino acid which is a mono-addition product having an excellent chelating property and excellent biodegradability derived from its secondary amine structure and prepared by the addition of a (meth)acrylic acid compound or the like to an amino acid compound or the like, while suppressing the formation of impurity polymers, the nonuniformity caused by the separation and precipitation of the solution and the formation of a di-addition product containing a tertiary amine structure having poor biodegradability. SOLUTION: The method for producing an N-carboxyalkyl-amino acid includes a step to prepare a solution containing the N-carboxyalkyl-amino acid by reacting a (meth)acrylic acid compound in a reaction liquid in which an amino acid compound is partly or completely neutralized. In the above process, the addition of the (meth)acrylic acid compound to the reaction liquid is carried out by dropping the compound after the partly or complete neutralization of the amino acid compound.
