PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new carbon-silicon carbide composite material having an SiC layer which is relatively deeply formed in a surface layer on the prescribed portion (sliding portion) of a carbon substrate for high strength, and suitable for a slide sealing member. SOLUTION: The carbon-silicon carbide composite material is produced by silicifying the surface layer on the portion (slide portion) having at least contact with an opposite material in the carbon substrate for high strength. The silicon carbide layer of the surface layer portion is formed so as to have a depth of at least 1 mm or more, and the uniform dispersibility of a silicon carbide base portion in that layer is secured also along the depth direction.
