PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inexpensively provide a recording material feeder capable of mounting further more recording materials on a feed tray at a time. SOLUTION: This automatic sheet feeder 7 is provided with: a sheet feed roller 71 arranged to be rotatably driven in the sheet feed direction; a mounting surface 73 for stacking a plurality of recording sheets P thereon; a belt carrier device 74 arranged to bring tips in the sheet feed direction of the plurality of recording sheets P stacked on the mounting surface 73 into contact with a circumferential surface of a carrying endless belt 743; a contact surface 75 arranged at a position where the tips in the sheet feed direction of the recording sheets P in contact with the circumferential surface of the carrying endless belt 743 separate from the circumferential surface of the carrying endless belt 743 and contact thereto by rotating the carrying endless belt 743 of the belt carrier device 74 forward; and a hopper 77 arranged to be movable forward and backward to a position allowing the vicinity of the tips in the sheet feed direction of the recording sheets P having the tips in the sheet feed direction contacting the contact surface 75 to be pressed against the sheet feed roller 71.
