PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a liquid crystal optical element for easily decreasing a driving voltage and increasing a scattering degree during an off state. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing the liquid crystal optical element includes steps of: (a) preparing a first substrate having a first electrode formed thereon and a second substrate having a second electrode formed thereon; (b) disposing the first and second substrates opposing to each other to form a vacant cell; (c) injecting a mixture material containing a liquid crystal, a monomer and a photopolymerization initiator into the vacant cell to form a liquid crystal cell; and (d) irradiating the liquid crystal cell with light in such a manner first regions irradiated with the light and second regions not irradiated with the light are alternately arranged in each plurality of numbers respectively along a first direction on the surface of the liquid crystal cell.
