An apparatus for horizontally aligning back plates used for manufacturing a brake pad is provided to automatically and accurately align back plates in the horizontal direction on a friction material cake which has been previously fabricated. An apparatus for horizontally aligning back plates comprises a back plate supply unit(60), a back plate aligning unit(62) and a back plate pickup unit(64). The back plate supply unit includes a guiding rod, on which a plurality of back plates(14) are settled, and a hydraulic cylinder(70), which moves the back plates upward. The back plate aligning unit includes a support plate(78) and a pair of settling protrusions(80a,80b) formed on the support plate. The back plate pickup unit includes a movable assembly(92) and a plurality of pickup head assembly(106) placed in the movable assembly.
