PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electric deionized water making apparatus capable of preventing the deflected flow or the contact failure with an ion exchange membrane caused by the expansion or shrinkage accompanying ion exchange reaction, requiring no high voltage and enhanced in the utilization efficiency of a current, and its operation method. SOLUTION: The electric deionized water making apparatus internally houses a vertical desalting chamber demarcated by an anion exchange membrane on an anode side and a cation exchange film on a cathode side, water to be treated is passed through the ion exchanger in the desalting chamber, a DC electric field is made to act in the direction vertical to the flow of the water to be treated through both ion exchange films, and ions in the water to be treated are electrically excluded into the concentrated water flowing to the outside of both ion exchange films. The ion exchanger is a mixed ion exchanger of a monolithic organic porous ion exchanger and a granular ion exchange resin. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
