PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a friction material which is more inexpensive than a conventional one, has excellent squeaking properties, fade performance and excellent abrasion resistance and controls facing material abrasion. SOLUTION: In the friction material comprising asbestos, steel wool, a fiber substrate except potassium titanate whisker, a binder, an organic filler and an inorganic filler, the friction material comprises 30-45 wt.% based on the total of the friction material of barium sulfate as one component of the inorganic filler, 2-8 wt.% based on the total of the friction material of diatomaceous earth, 3-10 wt.% based on the total of the friction material of burnt bonemeal and 3-10 wt.% based on the total of the friction material of mica.
