METHOD OF MANUFACTURING OPTICAL FILM

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of inexpensively manufacturing an optical film having uniform optical characteristics.

SOLUTION: The method of manufacturing the optical film comprises: a step of rubbing the surface of an alignment layer of a long plastic film F having the alignment layer formed on the surface using a rubbing roll 4 formed by winding a napped cloth 4a; a step of applying liquid crystal molecules on the surface of the alignment layer of the rubbed film; and a fixing step of fixing the applied liquid crystal molecules. In the rubbing step, the film is supported and transferred by a conveyor belt 3 having a metal surface and a back-up roll mechanism 5 for supporting the underside of the conveyer belt is arranged. The back-up roll mechanism is provided with a plurality of back-up rolls 51 respectively rotating along the transportation direction of the conveyer belt and each back-up roll is arranged direct below the rubbing roll along a line nearly parallel to the rotary shaft of the rubbing roll.
