PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a directly modulatable tunable laser that allows long-distance and large-capacity communication, using a simple and compact constitution. SOLUTION: The tunable laser has a semiconductor optical amplifier 1, an optical filter 2, and a frequency-amplitude converter 3. The semiconductor optical amplifier 1 generates the optical gain of an optical signal, and the optical filter 2 is constituted of a multistage-connection waveguide ring resonator so as to execute frequency modulation with respect to the optical signal.
