PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination devicecapable of obtaining a high visual effect even with a simpler configuration than heretofore without impairing characteristics of a laser beam emitted from a semiconductor laser element. SOLUTION: The illumination device is equipped with: a light source 11 composed of a semiconductor laser element; and a medium 41 disposed in front of the light source 11 and partially transmitting the laser beam 21 exiting from the light source 11 to project an optional image 42 onto an optional irradiation face 51. Thus the device can be downsized and can obtain a high visual effect even with a simpler configuration than heretofore without impairing characteristics of the laser beam 21 emitted from the semiconductor laser element.
