An improved action vacuum cleaner, especially for cleaning carpets, has a sonotrode (8) incorporated into the sweeping flange and near to the suction slot, to loosen dirt from the pile. The vibrations are generated parallel to the cleaning surface and brush the pile with an alternating action. A ribbed profile on the sweeping flange enhances the loosening of trapped dirt.
