The device (SG) has an interface (IF) for providing signals from acceleration sensors (BS1-3), which are mounted in an area of a bumper. An evaluation circuit e.g. microcontroller, effects classification of a collision with respect to signals and produces a control signal depending on the classification. A control circuit (FLIC) controls a personal protection unit (PS) e.g. airbag, depending on the control signal. The evaluation circuit has a differentiator, which differentiates the classes and loads, a pedestrian protection algorithm or a crash profound detection algorithm from a storage. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) method for controlling a person protection unit (2) a device comprising a control device.
