An operating method of a washing machine capable of efficiently washing a nd sterilizing laundry with a relatively large amount of contaminants is dis closed. The operating method of a washing machine which includes a tub (120) for storing washing water, a drum (130) for accommodating laundry, and a st eam generator (210) that is supplied with water for generating steam separat ely from the washing water to supply steam to the laundry, the operating met hod including performing a primary rinsing operation (S 130) for rinsing the laundry to discharge contaminants having a relatively large size to prevent a secondary contamination due to the contaminants having a relatively large size, performing a steam washing operation (S160) for supplying, steam to s teep the contaminants in water and sterilize the laundry while operating the drum, and performing a main washing operation (S170) for removing the conta minants and dissolving protein through high-temperature washing water contai ning a detergent while operating the drum.
