A vacuum cleaner and a controlling method thereof are provided to inform time for emptying dust easily for a user by forming the time for emptying dust in a collection device if a predetermined amount of dust is collected inside the collection device. A vacuum cleaner comprises a collection device having at least one dust storage part, cases, a first pressurizing member, a second pressurizing member, a compressed motor, a counter, a dust empty signal display part(630), and a control part(610). The first pressurizing member formed on the cases rotates with the cases. The second pressurizing member is fixed on the dust storage part. The compressed motor drives the cases. The counter measures time for moving the first pressurizing member. The dust empty signal display part shows information for emptying dust stored in the dust storage part. The control part operates the dust empty signal display part if the measured time for moving is below the reference time.
