PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a storage system or a data management transition method for executing the transition of the access destination of a host without stopping the transfer of data between the host and a storage device. SOLUTION: This storage system is provided with: a host for issuing the reading/writing of data; an external storage device equipped with an external logical volume for storing the data; and a first storage device forming a first virtual logical volume, wherein the host applies an instruction to perform the mapping of the management information of the external logical volume to the first storage device, and the first storage device performs the mapping of the management information of the external logical volume to a first virtual logical volume according to the instruction, and transmits the management information of the external logical volume and the first virtual logical volume to the host. The host retrieves the virtual logical volume having the same management information as the management information of the first virtual logical volume or the external logical volume based on the volume management information of both logical volumes, and sets it as the alternate volume of the object of reading and writing.
