PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image recording apparatus which reduces the load of the driving source of a moving mechanism by reducing a recording medium carrying unit weight, and at the same time, has an inexpensive constitution. SOLUTION: In the image recording apparatus, a driving transmission gear 42 is fixed to the axial end 41 of a driving roller 16 which rotation-drives a carrying belt 18. A driving gear 46 which is engaged with the driving transmission gear 42 is fixed to the axial end 45 of a belt driving motor 44 which is fixed to an apparatus frame 43. The driving transmission gear 42 is disengaged from the engagement with the driving gear 46 of the belt driving motor 44 while the recording medium carrying unit 4 is being lowered for a standing-by position, and is engaged with the driving gear 46 of the belt driving motor 44 when the recording medium carrying unit 4 is raised to an image recording position.
