PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve the optimal AF operation based on face detection. SOLUTION: The camera is provided with: an image pickup element 24; a face detection part 39c; a focal point detection part 19; a first focusing control part; a second focusing control part; and a control part. The face detection part detects the face image within a photographic picture, based on the output of the image pickup element. The focal point detection part calculates defocus quantity from the relative interval of a pair of images based on a light flux passing through a photographic lens in each of a plurality of candidate areas arranged in the photographic picture. The first focusing control part designates a focal point detection area from among the candidate areas, based on the output of the face detection part, and carries out the focusing operation of the photographic lens based on defocus quantity by an arithmetic operation. The second focusing control part calculates a focal point evaluation value in the face region, based on the output of the image pickup element, and retrieves a lens position for maximizing the focal point evaluation value, and carries out the focusing operation.
