PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat assisted magnetic head which can be manufactured by a conventional magnetic recording element manufacturing method and improve its production yield in a simple configuration. SOLUTION: This head has a slider 22 having a medium facing surface S, and a light source unit 23 having a light source support substrate 230 and a light source 40 supported on it. The slider 22 has a slider substrate 220 and a magnetic head section 32 provided on the slider substrate 220 and at the medium facing surface S side 2202. The magnetic head section 32 includes a magnetic recording element 34 to generate a magnetic field, and a waveguide 35 to receive light through the end face 354 opposite to the medium facing surface S to guide it to the medium facing surface S. The light source support substrate 230 is placed on the back surface 2201 opposite to the medium facing surface S of the slider substrate 220 to input the light from the light source 40 to the end face 354 of the waveguide 35, and a non-overlapping section 2201a is formed on the back surface 2201 of the slider substrate 220 in the area not overlapping the light source support substrate 230.
