<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To trim a photographic image while a face of a person photographed in the photograph image remains as well as an image part characterizing each scene. <P>SOLUTION: A face area of a photographed face is extracted from the photographic image by a face area extraction means 22. One of an area having brightness within a predetermined range, an area having saturation within a predetermined range, and an area including a large number of frequencies within a predetermined range is extracted as a target area from the photographic image P by a target area extraction means 23.
