PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To certainly detect the breaking of a belt by a simple and inexpensive constitution in a toggle type mold clamping device driven according to a belt driving system by a motor. SOLUTION: A dog 13 is attached to the crosshead 6a of a toggle mechanism 6 and a proximate switch 14 is attached to a rear platen 2 to detect that the crosshead 6a reaches a predetermined position. A position detector 12 is attached to the motor 8 for driving the toggle mechanism 6 through a belt 9 and a ball screw 7. If the dog 13 is not detected by the proximate switch 14 when the position detector 12 detects that the crosshead 6a reaches a predetermined position (a mold touch position or a position where a mold is opened by a predetermined distance from the touch position), the abnormality such as the breaking or the like of the belt 9 is judged to be occurred to output an alarm. By only adding a simple and inexpensive detection means such as the proximate switch or the dog to the conventional toggle type mold clamping device, the abnormality of the breaking of the belt or the like can be certainly detected.
