<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an aqueous and amphipathic copolymer emulsion having controlled viscosity, and to provide a method for producing the same. <P>SOLUTION: An aqueous and amphipathic emulsion copolymer including one or more aqueous-phase copolymers and containing residues of one or more hydrophilic chain-transfer agents and residues of one or more hydrophobic chain-transfer agents is provided. A method for producing such a copolymer in water or an aqueous liquid is also provided, comprising conducting a copolymerization between 20-80 wt.%, on a monomer component weight basis, of a hydrophilic group-containing monomer component and the balance of monomer component of a copolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer or prepolymer in the presence of a mixed chain-transfer agent component comprising hydrophilic chain-transfer agent(s) such as 3-mercaptopropionic acid and hydrophobic chain-transfer agent(s) such as N-dedecylmercaptan. This aqueous and amphipathic emulsion copolymer has storage stability, and even in the form of 50-80 wt.% high-solid composition, exhibits well-controlled viscosity.
