A handling system for a protective mat for underground working has the mat rolled onto a support bar (6) held on a support frame fitted to the movable working frame (4). The support frame is assembled from clip fastening sections clipped to the moving frame. The frame holds the mat at head height enabling operators to secure it to the tunnel roof, and subsequently to safely remove the mat on completion of the working.
