<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photographing apparatus where a function other than an auxiliary light emitting function is given to an LED. <P>SOLUTION: The photographing apparatus includes a mode switching circuit 1131 to switch a light emission mode to emit light from the LED 114 and a light receiving mode to receive external light by the LED 114, so that the function other than the auxiliary light emitting function is given to the LED 114. When the mode is switched by the mode switching circuit 1131 to the light receiving mode in replay to an instruction from a system control circuit 110, the system control circuit 110 instructs a backlight emission circuit 1502 to emit light from the backlight 1503 of the LCD so that the light amount may be equivalent to the power detected by a power detection circuit in the LED.
