<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable length code decoding device which is capable of coping with constitutions of various code tables to efficiently refer to a table for decoding processing when performing decoding processing and is capable of adjusting trade-off between a size of a table necessary for decoding processing and decoding processing performance. <P>SOLUTION: Each entry of tables for decoding processing is provided with a flag indicating completion or continuation of decoding processing. A decoding result and the number of effective bits are recorded in an entry showing the completion of decoding processing. Information identifying a table for decoding, which will be used in the next processing, and the number of bits to be segmented from a code word to be used when referring to the table at the next time are recorded in an entry showing the continuation of decoding processing. When decoding processing is started, information identifying a table for use and the number of bits to be referred to from a code word when referring to the table are designated together with the code word.
