PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the current commutation method in the vicinity of zero-cross point of output current in a self-excited cycloconverter performing current commutation depending on the polarity of a current passing through an output inductor L. SOLUTION: The cycloconverter has switch pairs AU, AV, BU and BV between the nodes A and B of a first port and the nodes U and V of a second port. In the switch pairs AU, AV, BU and BV, P topology switches AUP, AVP, BUP and BVP and N topology switches AUN, AVN, BUN and BVN are connected in series. With regard to the switches AU and BU, for example, the P topology switch AUP is turned on after the magnitude of the current passing through an output inductor L becomes less than a predetermined current threshold, and the P topology switch BUP is turned off after a predetermined time.
